Let's Talk About Sex
Good morning, my Lovelies! It is Saturday morning, I just finished a cup of coffee, and I'm lounging around in sexy comfort while I'm waiting for the laundry to finish. Ok, so maybe the laundry part of that isn't sexy, but wearing one of my favorite lingerie sets is. Comfort? Alright, alright, I was chilly and threw on some sweatpants. Fine. I look a hot mess, as usual. Moving on.
It was pointed out to me yesterday, that when I began this blog I talked mostly about sex, or my books, or sex in my books, and that recently all I've been talking about is how tired I am and complaining about my job. All true. However, as I've pointed out before, I use my blog as a chance to clear my head and to work through some of the shit I'm going through. Therefore, if I have been boring you with my mental health purges, I apologize.
So you want to talk about sex? Sure! I mean, sex sells, right? So let's talk about sex in literature. How far is too far? Is it better to leave sexual situations up to the imagination of the reader? Should writers go into extremely descriptive detail? Or, should it be a combination, a middle ground that plays peek-a-boo with our sensual thoughts?
In my writing, I find I do a little of it all. There are times that I feel the reader should be given each and every down and dirty detail, and there are times I feel that the reader needs to know less of the explicit and more of the feelings that my characters are experiencing. Sometimes I get so caught up in a sex scene that my words only come across the page as straight up and sometimes, hardcore sex. When that happens I wonder if I lose the romantic element for which I strive. Of course, there are other times where I feel my words are only conveying romance and I lose that touch of sex that adds the element of spice that I love.
Also, for those of you wondering, believe it or not, I do hold back my sexual imagination in my books. I mean, sometimes I just have to slap the handcuffs, gags, and blindfolds on my characters to get them to slow down a little bit and think about what they're doing. (See what I did there?) My Patreon, though, offers short stories that are considerably more...well, you know...more.
So, what do you think? What do you want when you're reading a steamy book? I mean, I know I can't please everyone, but it would be nice to have feedback on what is too little, what is too much, and what keeps you hungry for more.
